Unfortunately, there are many people in the United States who find themselves without a place to live. Being homeless is scary and can cause a lot of anxiety for individuals who face the situation day in and out. One of the topics that often comes up is whether or not someone can live inside of their storage unit. People may gravitate towards living in a storage unit because they see it as a means of shelter, and it can be quite affordable as well.

But, is living in a storage unit legal and is it a viable option? Living within a storage unit is against the rules to most, if not all, storage facilities and it is not a safe option for you either.

Why is it unsafe?

You may be curious as to why it is so unsafe to live in a storage unit. After all, it seems like it would be one of the safer options out there right?

For starters, the doors on your storage unit lock from the outside and NOT from the inside. This means that unless you are locked into the unit, there is no way for you to safely and properly secure the unit from the inside. Even if you have someone lock you into the unit, there is no telling what could happen and in some cases, you may face serious health challenging situations.

While locking the doors is an issue, another issue is that there are no windows in the unit. You may be thinking that you do not need any type of natural light or windows at this point, but you will quickly find yourself craving it once you are stuck in the four enclosed walls of the unit. Did you know that a lack of natural light can lead to depression?

Next, it is near impossible to cook for yourself in the unit. Yes, you could dine on canned foods, but how long can you sustain yourself doing that? You will find that most units do not have any access to power and if you are lucky enough to have one that does, cooking within the unit is dangerous.

Lastly, you will find that there is no running water within a storage unit and definitely no bathroom. This just leads to unhealthy and unsanitary conditions that you do not want to find yourself a part of.

Do people actually try to live in storage units?

Yes. People do try to live in storage units and unfortunately, there are been negative outcomes for some of these individuals from legal ramifications to death caused by extreme weather and living conditions.

There is no way to track the exact magnitude of the problem because, well, most people will not admit to living in their storage unit, but do remember that it is not a safe or healthy way to live.

Living in a Storage Unit Should Be Avoided

As we mentioned briefly, most, if not all, storage facilities have restrictions on living within the unit and that is to keep you safe. If you are in need of shelter, look at your local community resources and avoid trying to live in a storage unit as it is not healthy or safe.
