Planning a move into a storage unit is not always easy, especially when you are not prepared for the move. Whether it is your first time or subsequent time moving your items into a storage unit, you can use the checklist below to make sure that you are fully prepared for a smooth transition.

Items You Will Need for Your Storage Unit

There are some basic items that you need for your storage unit to ensure that you have the best and smoothest transition from your home to your unit.

  1. Lock

You will need a lock to secure your storage unit. The facility you rent your unit from will not provide you with a lock and it is your responsibility to provide one.

  1. Boxes, Tape, and Permanent Markers

These items will assist you in the packing process and allow you to pack your items properly. You should use the cardboard boxes and tape to secure your items and the permanent markers to label the boxes.

  1. Pallets

Pallets are a great addition to any storage unit and will allow you to store your furniture and items off of the floor. This is a good idea for people who live in climates that tend to have a lot of rain.

  1. Shelving

Depending on what you plan to store in your unit, you will want to evaluate whether or not you need shelving. Shelves do not automatically come with your storage unit, but they are beneficial, especially when you want to keep your items organized and out of the main stack of boxes.

  1. Mattress Covers and Furniture Wrap

Mattress covers will protect your mattress from any bugs and pests that may enter into your unit. Unfortunately, you always need to be cautious of e dugs, so a mattress cover will allow you to protect your mattress without the worry that you will pull it out and it be covered in pests.

Furniture wrap is similar to a mattress cover, but it is wrapped around your furniture items to protect them while they are in your storage unit. If you wrap your furniture PRIOR to moving it, you will not have to worry about the upholstery being ripped either.

  1. Blankets

Blankets are a good idea if you need to move heavy furniture. The reason behind this is because you want to be able to slide the furniture without scratching the floor or the legs to the furniture. You can use blankets to transition the furniture from the truck to the storage unit.

  1. Hand Trucks

Hand trucks are extremely helpful when you move items to your storage unit. A hand truck allows you to easily move items without having to lift and carry them. Often times, a hand truck will come with your truck rental or there will be some available at the storage facility.

Double Check Your List to Make Sure You Have Everything

This small checklist will help you get prepared to move your items from your home to your storage unit. It always helps to be prepared, so that you do not have to wing it the entire way.
