Rugs are beautiful and they add a nice touch to any home décor, but if you are planning on storing your rugs, it is important that you follow the proper steps to ensure they are in the same condition you leave them in. Before you settle on a storage unit for your rugs, make sure that you choose one that is climate controlled as this will prevent any mold or mildew from forming on the rug itself while you are gone. Below, we will review the steps you need to take to store your home’s rugs.

  1. Make Sure the Rug is Clean

If your rug is dirty, it will attract pests and any stains on it may become embedded in the carpet fibers. You want to make sure that you have the rugs cleaned before you store them and shut the storage unit door.

Rugs, especially those made from high quality fibers, need to be cleaned professionally and properly. If you add too much soap or water to the rugs, they can easily be ruined. Make sure that the company you work with has experience cleaning rugs and always, always, always allow the rug to fully dry out before you even consider placing it in a storage unit.

  1. Always Roll Your Rug

Once you have confirmed that your rug is completely dry, you can begin to prepare it for storage. Avoid walking all over the rug as this will simply transfer dirt to the rug and negate all of the cleaning that was just done.

When ready, start rolling up your rug from one end to the next. You may need help performing the rolling process, especially if your rug is large in size.

If you are thinking about folding up your rug, do NOT do it. This will ruin your rug and leave awkward creases in the rug itself.

  1. Secure the Rug

After the rug is rolled, you will need to secure it in place, otherwise, it will simply unroll itself. You can purchase special rug tape that will allow you to secure the rug. You do not want to use any tape on the rug as some tape will destroy the fibers on the rug.

  1. Lay the Rug Down

When you do store your rug, you want to make sure that you store the rug on its side, lying flat. If the rug is left standing upright, it may bend at the tape and cause a crease in the rug. Also, you want to avoid placing any items on top of the rug as it is lying in storage as heavy items can also cause creasing or problems with the way the carpet lays.

If you are planning to store any of your rugs, you want to make sure you follow the above steps to properly prepare the rug and store it. The most important thing to remember is that the rug should ALWAYS be clean and dry when you store it.
