Just when you thought you could place those bulky propane tanks in your storage unit, you learn that you are unable to. Bummer, right? There are some items that cannot be stored in your unit and knowing what these items are will prevent you the hassle of taking the items there and having to cart them home.

Below, we will go over some common items that you may want to store, but cannot and shouldn’t at the same time.

Item 1: Rubber Tires

While you are allowed to store some rubber tires, your storage facility is unlikely to let you store more than this. The reason behind this is that if for some reason you leave them behind, it will cost the storage unit a lot of money to properly remove them from the premises.

If you are in the tire industry, you may be allowed to store additional tires by providing your active business license and tax id.

Item 2: Explosive and Toxic Items

In the scenario above, it was mentioned that propane tanks couldn’t be stored in the storage unit and the same goes for explosive and toxic items. For instance, you cannot keep gasoline, ammunition, paints, motor oil, antifreeze, and the like.

The reason behind this is if something should happen, these items could cause a fire and pose a risk to others’ health.

Item 3: Yourself

Unbelievably, some people do try to live inside of their storage unit. What happens is, the person will rent a climate-controlled unit and then stay inside of it. They will use the facility’s restroom for their needs and they may leave late at night to go get food.

It is not safe to live in a storage unit and it is against most storage units’ policies.

Item 4: Perishable Items

You cannot store perishable items in your storage unit. This is because these items expire and they often attract pests. Some perishable items that you cannot bring along include pet food, bread, candy, and similar items.

Item 5: Plants

Just like perishable items, you cannot store plants in your storage unit. The reason behind this is that the plants can die and cause pests to enter the facility.

If you are thinking about storing any of these items, do yourself a favor and keep them at home. If you do not want them anymore, consider tossing them in the trash or donating them to a local charity.
