As you begin sliding your furniture across the floor, you hear an eerily loud scratching sound. That sound is one of your beautiful hardwood floor being scratched up. While your flooring may seem durable, it is not intended to take on heavy furniture moving across it.

Before you scratch your floors, consider the following tips to protect your wood flooring in your old home and new home.

Runners and Rugs

If you have a handful of runners and rugs on hand, you can lay them throughout your home starting from the doorway and heading to the item you need to move. You can opt-in for some non-slip grips to place on the bottom of the runners so that they do not move around everywhere while you are pushing the furniture.

Sheet

If you have an extra sheet that you are not using or maybe it is torn up, you can use it to help move your furniture. Simply lift up the furniture and slide the sheet under it. As you push the piece of furniture, the sheet will slide across the floor and prevent scratches or damage.

Furniture Dolly

A furniture dolly works wonders and since it is on wheels, it prevents scratches on your floor. You can choose to use a small dolly that slides underneath the entire piece of furniture or you can use one that the piece of furniture leans on. Both will prevent scratches and assist you in the moving process.

Red Rosin Paper

You can pick up a roll or two of red rosin paper at your local home improvement store. This paper can be taped to your flooring and prevents any scratches from sliding your furniture. Once you are done moving, simply remove the paper from the floor.

How to Handle Scratches

If a scratch or two does occur, you can easily fix them with some stain from your local hardware store. You will need to match the stain to the color of flooring and then apply a light coat. Once the stain is dry, you will never know that a scratch was even there.

Preventing scratches on your hardwood floor is possible when you take the steps needed to ensure you protect your flooring. All of the above options are quick, simple, and affordable solutions to ensure your wood flooring stays beautiful during your move.
