Organizing your home can come with a lot of stress, especially if you are needing to organize your home to have guests over. You likely have an idea of how you want your home to look and it is probably what the cover of Better Homes and Gardens looks like. Not all homes can be perfect like that one, after all, those photos may be of homes that no one lives in. Let’s face it – homes can be disorganized, and they get that way quite easily, especially with the hustle and bustle of the day. Below, we will help you organize your home without the stress that often comes along with it.

Don’t Go for the Big Cleaning Session

We have all done it before – your mother in law calls and says she is coming over in a couple hours and you sprint to do an entire cleaning on your home to make it presentable. Not only does this cause a ton of stress, it can put you in a bad mood when your mother in law is there to visit. There is a solution to this issue though – clean in small increments. What we mean by this is that throughout each day, simply pick something up or do something small. This way, you do not have to do a big cleaning every time someone says they are going to stop by.

Get Rid of the Items That Can and Do Smell

You want to tackle all the items in your home that either do smell or have the potential to smell such as the garbage, laundry, and dishes. For example, you may want to start a load of laundry, take out the trash, and then tackle the dishes in the sink. Simply doing these three things will make a dent in keeping your home organized and you will feel refreshed.

Don’t Overdo It

Organizing your home can be quite the task and you do not want to overdo it now because then you will not want to do it again later. You should break the work down into tasks that are small and easily managed. For example, one task could be to remove all papers from the dining room table, sort them, and toss out what you don’t need. This task can take about 15 minutes and then have a small break and then move onto the next task. Try to keep your tasks at about 20 minutes per.

Find a Place for Everything

This will take time and you may not always have a place for everything. Do your best to find a home for all the things you do have and if they do not have a home, consider if you really need the item or not. You can always utilize a self-storage unit if you find you have too many items and not enough places to put them within your home.

Get Organized in Your Home Today

Getting your home organized is a process and will take some time but by breaking it down into more manageable chunks and doing a little bit each day, you can alleviate your stress and feel better about those surprise visit from friends and family.
