If you have a piano in your home that needs to be moved, you may want to learn more about how to move it before you simply just do it. In fact, a piano can be difficult to move and since it is delicate, you do not want to make a misstep and break it.

Below, we will provide you with some tips to help you quickly and safely move your piano from one location to the next.

  1. Make Sure the Weight is Distributed Evenly

One of the biggest mistakes that a person can make is to NOT make sure that the weight of the piano is distributed evenly. If the weight is too heavy on one of the piano legs, the leg may give way and crack or break.

Since you want the weight to be distributed evenly, you should have additional help when you need to lift the piano. If you are trying to move it yourself, it is likely that you will run into problems because no one person can lift the piano themselves.

  1. Prepare for the Job at Hand

A piano is not a feather and you should not underestimate the weight of the piano. You should prepare yourself and your teammates for the job at hand. This means you need to remove any hazards from the area and stretch out before you attempt to lift it up.

You should also be in synch with the others who are preparing to help you. Remember, the weight needs to be distributed evenly and if you start to lift before another helper, too much weight can be placed on a section of the piano.

  1. Get the Piano Ready

If you thought you and four others could go into the room, lift the piano, and be done with it, you were wrong. The piano itself needs to be properly prepped before it can be moved. Often times, if you can remove the legs, it is recommended that you do. You also want to make sure that the cover for the keys is down and secured, so that it does not fly open. In addition, the top of the piano also needs to be secured in a close fashion to prevent it opening as you move through door ways.

Wrap the piano in thick, plush blankets to help protect it even further. If you cannot remove the legs from the piano, you also want to make sure they are wrapped and protected.

  1. Never Push the Piano

Whether the piano is on legs or wheels, you should never push it or pull it across the floor. These wheels and legs were not made for that and can easily detach or become damaged during the move.

If you are moving a piano yourself, make sure that you are prepared to do it. If you need additional help, enlist your friends or family members to pitch in. If you find that you do not have help or you would like the extra peace of mind, hire a professional moving company to handle the piano move for you.
