When shopping around for a storage unit, it is important that you consider whether you need a climate-controlled unit or not. This decision will be one of the biggest ones you make and if you make the wrong decision, it could cost you some of your items.

As you look around for your unit, consider the items that you will be storing. Below, we will go over six different items that NEED to be kept inside of a climate-controlled unit to prevent damage to them.

1. Household Appliances

If you plan to store any of your household appliances, you need to place them in a climate-controlled unit. The reason behind this is that extreme heat and cold can cause the mechanical parts of your appliances to become damaged and useless. Some of the most commonly stored appliances include washers, refrigerators, dryers, ovens, and dishwashers.

2. Wine

If you have a wine collection, you need to protect it from extreme temperatures. If you leave the wine in a unit that is not climate-controlled, you will find that the wine ages quickly and begins to oxidize. Once this happens, the taste of the wine diminishes and you will not be able to drink it.

3. Furniture

Your furniture needs to be stored safely and in a climate-controlled unit. The reason behind this is that when wood is allowed to sit in a humid unit, it will become warped and deteriorate.

Leather will also deteriorate and if moisture is allowed to collect and remain on the leather, you may have a bigger problem – mold.

4. Tools

Tools are another heat sensitive item. Allowing them to sit in a humid unit can lead severe rusting of the metal.

5. Clothing

When clothes sit in a humid unit, they can become damp and then mold can grow on the clothing and ruin some of your most favorite pieces. Once the smell of mold is embedded into your clothing, it can be hard to remove.

6. Electronics

Your electronics cannot take extreme heat or cold and when they do, you will be left with a useless piece of equipment. Humidity can ruin your electronics’ motherboards and internal equipment so make sure to prepare accordingly.

When you are looking for a self storage unit, consider what exactly you need to store and determine whether it can be damaged by extreme fluctuations in the weather. If you think it can, opt-in for a climate-controlled unit. It is better to be safe than sorry.
